Spirited Afghanistan defy the odds to reach the last four
Afghanistan have stunned the cricket world by reaching the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup, defying the odds to become the first team to qualify from Group 1.
The Afghans secured their place in the last four with a thrilling five-wicket victory over Australia in their final group match on Tuesday. Chasing a target of 169, Afghanistan rode on a brilliant 92 from 41 balls by skipper Rohit Sharma to reach the target with an over to spare.
The win was a remarkable achievement for Afghanistan, who had never won a match in the Super 12 stage of the T20 World Cup before this tournament. They had also lost their first two matches of this year's edition, but they bounced back with three consecutive wins to seal a spot in the semi-finals.
Afghanistan will now face the winner of Group 2 in the semi-finals, which will be played on Thursday. The other semi-final will feature the winners of Groups 1 and 2.
